Picture 2 is this morning's sunrise from nearly the same place but looking in the opposite direction towards Newstead. Can't think of much of interest to tell you about Newstead. There used to be a colliery but that isn't remarkable in this area. Alternate rows of the colliery provided terrace-houses have been retained and refurbished and they now look very attractive. Before the village streets were cramped but now they feel quite airy and open. There are some good planning and architectural decisions made after all.
Blood -test again today. The Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital have recently merged and there are teething problems re decisions as to where different sorts of blood-tests are sent. I'm sure it will work out though. Tracy rang yesterday to see if I was OK. And I am. Y is back tomorrow. After my blood-test I managed to call in on Beryl again. She is so pleased for the company bless her. As she says "drinking coffee alone never tastes as good".
This quote, although of general interest, is earmarked for Madeline who was recently 'got-at' on WU forum for a most helpful 'post' re my 'italics'. It did seem a bit pointed because the 'poster' before M made a chatty comment too, about which nothing was said. Anyway here is the quote. I don't need to underline 'moral luminaries' !
"The people who are regarded as moral luminaries are those who forego ordinary pleasures themselves and find compensation in interfering with the pleasures of others."
That's about it............
Thanks for the quotation, I might pinch it for my signature! He's still at it by the way! I love the sunset and sunrise pictures. Like you I find the sky endlessly fascinating, except when it's a uniform grey. When we moved here from a large town, the sky seemed vast, but we're used to it now.
ReplyDeleteMadeline.
A dramatic but rather forbidding sunset.
ReplyDeleteFrom a couple of miles to the east of Ollerton one can see Lincoln Cathedral on a clear day but the best panorama I know is from Sutton Bank, whence it is said to be possible to pick out both York Minster to the south and The Angel of The North (but not without turning one’s head). And I may be exaggerating.
I have never been to Crich. And I have never seen ‘The Sound of Music’ or been in a Macdonalds. One has to draw the line somewhere.
I once went to a quiz night in a pub at Newstead Colliery Village (as opposed to Abbey). It was dark when we arrived and the dimly lit pub, down by the railway, resembled the Adams Family Mansion or Mrs Bates’ House (Psycho). I actually wrote a second rate but eerie short story based on the experience.
I went again in daylight and the village looked much better, as RadioG has remarked..
I like the quote which, for me, sums up the anti-smoking lobby who will move onto drink next and then, unless Clinton returns, sexual intercourse. I am only prepared to declare that I gave up smoking 25 years, 8 months and 5 days ago (and now I never think about it – but if I ever end up with a last request it will be for a fag). Did you know that the last requests of a man on Death Row in America included a cigarette which he was refused because of the risk to his health? If I could find the clipping I would tell you his name and the date of his execution.
But I still don’t have the background info to understand Madeline’s annoyance arising from the ‘italics’ issue. Any chance of someone telling me?
I think I have caught up now but please also see my comment on Sunday’s blog.
Having failed to set up my own blog, I feel that I am now riding pillion on yours!
